Here's the link to an Australian article about China, Taiwan and South Korea banning PAPs with Body Mass Indices of greater than 40 for China and 30 for Taiwan and South Korea. As you probably know, this is not the case for all adoption programs in Taiwan.
For those of you not in the know, BMI is a much tougher standard to meet than the insurance height and weight tables. If you are muscularly dense, for example, you could be completely hosed by the BMI scale, as follows:
BMI is a reliable indicator of total body fat, which is related to the risk of disease and death. The score is valid for both men and women but it does have some limits. The limits are:At least the insurance height and weight tables correct for build and give a range of weights.
- It may overestimate body fat in athletes and others who have a muscular build.
- It may underestimate body fat in older persons and others who have lost muscle mass. (citation)
Update: I ran my own BMI. I pass, but having lifted weights a large portion of my life (and sinking like a stone in water aerobics as a result), I'm much higher than you'd expect. Wonder if they'd knock me out on BMI grounds, anyway...? Grrr.....
